They can be used at meetings, trainings, seminars, and other networking events. You can use them within groups, or even between two people who just wish to strike up a conversation.

But they are especially great when you are making a presentation to an audience you are meeting for the first time. The questions below can be used between two people or in a group. If used by a speaker to many people, just select 3 or 4 people to answer any of the questions ,this will ease up tension and open up the floor for further discussion. You can then start your presentation proper from there.
Examples of Ice-Breaker Questions
- What do you plan to gain out of this meeting?
- Is this your first time at this event?
- Do you read books? What book are you reading right now?
- What was the biggest challenge you have ever faced and how did you overcome it?
- What has been the highlight of your day/week /this course etc so far?
- If you had the opportunity to have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
- If you were to write a song, what would the title be?
- What has been the highlight of your career so far?
- If you had a second chance at life, what would you do differently?
- Why did you come for this training or attend this meeting?
- If you could travel to any place on earth, where would you go?
- Name your role model
- If you were an animal what would you be?
- What is the one piece of advice, your mother/father/guardian/mentor told you that has helped you through life?
- What is your favourite movie and why do you like it so much?
Ice breakers can also be simple games like rock, paper, scissors, or other games. The basic idea is to make everyone comfortable and free so that they can pay attention and get the best out of the session.
